Auctioneering 101: What Sells and What Doesn’t
Nov 15th, 2007 by tyson
There is an exhaustive list of things that sell in World of Warcraft or any other game. Most anything sells in truth, but there are definitely categories people look for and then there are the items people stumble upon just browsing.
- Weapons: because combat is such a huge part of any mmo (at the time of writing) weapons are right up there as one of the most looked for items. Therefore, if you can find a good deal on a weapon, and put it back up for more, your chances of making a profit more quickly are greater.
- Armor: not quite the seller that weapons are, armor is a mostly indirect way of increasing your character’s power through personal stats, not through pure damage (yes, technically that’s just a stat too). But it’s right up there as one of the best sellers. In WoW, blue (rare) items and above are where you can find some of the best deals and make the most money.
- Profession-based items: herbs, metal, stone, and now jewels (through herbalism and mining) are great sellers on the AH, though unless I was just beginning and wanted very little profits, I would not look for deals here, just use them as a way to make more money as I gathered while actually playing the game. The market is usually pretty tight in these areas.
- Recipes, Patterns & Formulas: ah, now these really sell great. Not the low ones, but once you start making serious money on the ah (100+), begin looking for these. The rare ones are only currently in a few professions, but just as “rare” to find are some of the green ones, and worth lots of money when they appear on the ah. These will make you a fortune if you look for deals here. Learn them, search them often to get a good feel for what’s out there, and when you spot something unfamiliar for a seemingly low price, let it immediately alert you that a great deal might be had. Now head over to allakhazam and see if it’s really worth buying.
- Pets: do some searches on the net for “world of warcraft pets” and you’ll come up with a list of them. One way to make money is by searching out some of these (dragon whelplings come to mind) and seeing if you get lucky. It’s not how I usually spend my time, but at least when starting out, and when you’re of level, it can be a fun gamble… I actually never got one but didn’t try all too hard. Any rare pets that you do acquire will sell well, but the only problem is that it really isn’t a consistent money maker, though my “apprentice” did it a few times and got lucky, and was able to start in a higher auction house league because of it.
I’m sure I will be covering these again at some point so will leave the list as is for now, with lots more to add.
