WoW: New Character, New Server, No Help: March to 1000 Gold Begins
Dec 21st, 2007 by tyson
I realize this site is barely off the ground but there are already a lot of tips and I’m ready to get started. I’m thinking of perhaps doing a podcast or just posts on my progress to 1000g from absolutely nothing, with no help, and NO add on. But first I need a new character in WoW. You can help by voting for what that character and server type will be:
- Race (any)
- Class (any)
- Server Type (PVE, RP, PvP, RP-PvP – I will begin on the type voted on using a server I currently have zero characters or friends on).
My mission: achieve 1000g by using only the techniques I’ve extolled here on this site. No add-ons, no help from other characters.
Your mission: Please vote with a comment on this thread and tell others about it to vote. The majority of votes for each Race, Class, and Server type will win, and that is who I’ll play and on which server I will play on. If you have a comment, great. If it’s just Race: xyz, Class: xyz, Server Type: xyz, then that’s fine.
I’ll keep this open until New Year’s Eve, midnight, and will begin the next day, January 1st ’08 with a new character.
Looking forward to the votes, and if there aren’t any, I will still choose something and let you know! So let’s hear from you.
UPDATE: As of 12.24 7am, votes are as follows: Night Elf (Drae 2nd), Warrior (Druid 2nd), PvE (RP-PvE 2nd)
UPDATE #2: As of 12.27 5:34pm, it will likely be a PvE server, race uncertain but Night Elf in the lead. Also, another tip that I will again reinforce: perhaps *the* most important aspect to keeping your gps high (that’s gold per second!) is making deals with others. Can’t count how many times talking to others has made a huge difference, whether mail or chat. One of my previous posts goes into that a little, but it’s something I will come back to.
UPDATE #3: Here’s how it’s going to work, roughly. I’m going to attempt a podcast. Have audacity and am actually able to (woohoo!) talk while in WoW, so will be recording sessions as I play. The first podcast will be an introduction to the character, why I chose it and my first adventures in getting enough money for an investment. As I have a family and other life, updates aren’t going to happen every day, but I will make every attempt to keep them fairly frequent and even if a shorter session, it should still prove valuable. My main fear is that anyone on the server I’m on is going to make me find a new job after the advice! Hehe, I’ll survive.
Also, there will be pictures! I’m going to create an images section for just this experiment and reference the set of images during the podcast, with links on the site. Not that they will be all too exciting, but they should help reinforce. Happy holidays, again. Really looking forward to starting this.
UPDATE #4: Happy New Year everyone! It’s 7 hours away from the new year, and I’m really looking forward to starting this. Unless more votes come, it is going to be a Night Elf on a PvE server. I am not promoting the site tonight so I don’t expect any more votes to come in. We shall see!

For some reason, screaming “NIGHT ELF DRUID NIGHT ELF DRUID” appeals to me, mainly to spite you into having to walk all the way to Darnassus to get to an AH. Heh. ^^;;
Night Elf Druid on an RP server.
Just to be interesting.
Thanks, sadist eh? Remember I’m gonna have to build this character up until I have enough money to buy at least something. I’m thinking about level 10 – 12 so I can save around 50s for the first investment.
Well, to be nice, you can always roll it as a hunter instead of a druid – if we’re talking about getting things up “as fast as possible”, yada yada, that’d probably be my suggestion.
But, then again, I’m just throwing up suggestions to be interesting – the end result that I actually want in the end is the information you provide, so I can get that good ol’ learning experience.
I still think you should roll in an RP server, mainly for one reason – amusement! What better way to spend time leveling from 1-10 or so than listening to people fight about how their dwarven families got eaten by tallstriders?
Here’s my estimation on how long things would take for me to hit 1000g, from shortest time to longest. So if people want to make it tough for me, here’s my best guess how
Overall fastest to longest:
1. PvE Alliance
2. RP-PvE Alliance
3. PvE Horde
4. RP-PvE Horde
Unknowns because I’m not familiar with PvP servers (assume PvP gear for lower levels might go for a bit more):
PvP Alliance
RP-PvP Alliance
PvP Horde
RP-PvP Horde
Night Elf warrior on a PvE alliance realm.
Thanks for your vote. And thanks in advance to anyone else’s. Any ties and I will be the tiebreaker.
Blood Elf starting quests (1-10) seem to make the most money whenever I start again, but,
Night Elf Druid on a RP server sounds most fun to me. ;D
So there you go!
Not just for torture, but you can tell us of your adventures! Eh? eh?
Good luck~
I’d almost say to do it on a PvP server with a slower leveling mail/plate class, just to really challenge you with constant gear upgrades needed, difficulty of being in contested zones and repairs:
Human Warrior
PvP
But if the guide will be more slanted towards struggling newer players I’d suggest:
Draenei Hunter
PvE
Easier class to deal with broke, great starting zone for early quest rewards and a handy AH in the Exodar.
BE Rogue / Draenei Warrior on a PvE server.
Human Paladin on an RP-PvP server.
For the TLDR folks, read the bottom.
Are you planning on making a real effort to level the character, or simply stop leveling when you’re first able to buy somthing?
If you’re not going to level the character beyond what’s needed to make a 50s purchase from the AH it doesn’t realy matter what race, class, faction, or server you play because all of the classes are going to progress at pretty much the same rate and can make 50s before leaving the zones around their capitol and you’ll most likely not be interfered with. Most complaints about the inability to make money stem from having to do the upkeep on one’s character while making progress. Making a thousand gold at level 10 or 15 will prove that it can be done but it’s not quite the same as if you had continued to level because the expenses will chew away at your bottom line, especialy if you play a high maintinance class like a Warrior or have to continuously buy ammo for a Hunter. Professions can also take away from your bottom line if you pick up somthing like Enchanting or Blacksmithing.
I think that if you’re realy going to prove a point to the WoW community you’re going to have to level a character solo and take it to 60 on Azeroth. Once you get into Outland the money begins to flow, so if you’re able to make bank while leveling in the ‘poor world’ it will give more validity to your methods.
So, having said all of that, I think you would convince most people by leveling a Warrior on a PvP server since they seem to be notoriously difficult to level in comparison to most others due to their huge dependence on items and lack of a pet and healing abilities, and a PvP server because you’ll get the hardships of leveling interrupted.
TLDR:
Non-Draenei Alliance Warrior, PvP server.
Thanks all. @Phelan,
Your point about initial race / class is valid, however the server matters, not for the initial investment, but for the population base and maturity… both things I’ve talked about on this site.
If you’re on an RP-PvE server, low population and playing Horde, the amount of activity just isn’t there in the AH. That’s where I was most recently until my main moved. But I’ve played on both established stable economy servers as well as start up servers that weren’t RP, on alliance and they go through maturation periods where sometimes it’s incredibly easy to make money, while other times it’s tough. So of all the choices, the server type and population is the biggest influence on how fast/easy it’s going to take. Race / class is just for fun mostly but I’d like to give people the chance to decide everything.
And I’d like to point out that the main purpose of the site in general is to show players how they don’t have to spend hours grinding, mining (etc.), or doing daily’s for money… as well as that you can do this low levels. You can make so much in the AH that buying proper gear for your level, even with a Warrior or gear-dependent class (I have a 61 War and did from scratch) you can even buy blues. Anyway, another discussion for another time. Keep the votes coming, thanks.
P.S. I plan to stop when I make an investment and discuss AH strategies and how I’m making money. There are other sites that discuss best ways to level up. Best greens for level (which is what players should be getting for the most part unless PvP, along with instance gear) is usually all that you need until 60, and these + skills won’t account for much in the grand scheme of things. At least they haven’t for me when doing this.
Yeah, being honest, discussing AH strategies is more of why I’m here – after all, being a seasoned WoW player for over two years now, I’ve been around the block enough to know how to make money by grinding, dailies, and whatnot.
AH strategies, though….there’s the ticket to the big bucks. That’s what I’m interested in learning more about.
Night elf druid on a PVE server!
Great blog btw
Night Elf Priest Alliance PvE Server
Thanks for the votes and support. Keep ‘em coming! NE and PvE are winning.
i think you should be a alliance on a PvE server.
silvermoon is a nice and old PvE server, the prices on it are not over priced or too cheap
and i say be a hunter NE, because hunter is simple to kill stuff for money
Alright, seems as if there’s a theme to get right to the auction house as quickly as possible. Not quite surprising but good to know. @yoshimagick, I do not have any characters on silvermoon yet, although I did once create a lvl 1 human there for a race to Booty Bay.
“My mission: achieve 1000g by using only the techniques I’ve extolled here on this site. No add-ons, no help from other characters.”
No add-ons? None? Wow, now that’s going to be impressive. Add me to your cheering section.
/pulls out pom-poms
Not using Auctioneer Classic or Advanced is like going back to nature and eating bark (no offense to all the Druids out there).
In terms of buying your first item, pick up Skinning and Mining as your first two professions when you hit level 5 and then skin/mine ruthlessly as you quest. By the time you hit level 6 or 7 if you don’t have 1-2 gold worth of ore/skins to sell I’ll be surprised.
Good luck.

Hey, Ive been reading the site/blog/forums, and I have got to say, this is a great site. Good information for someone who is just starting out, or for someone who plays the auction house.
Anyways My Vote would be, A Drenaei Hunter On a PvE server. Although it seems that there has not been any votes for Drenaei, So really just choose any race but keep it a hunter, on a PvE.
To save you some work, Human Warlock on PvE realm…
Sounds like fun.
Based on what you’re trying to do, sounds like race and class really won’t matter as much as server population and economy.
I’d guess more people roll Alliance and more roll on PVE servers, so that would probably be a good choice. A mature, medium pop server would give you more AH activity to work with but also more competition — so might be interesting to see how you’d fare sans Auctioneer against in an active market.
I understand levelling, questing and grinding isn’t the point or I’d suggest a NE hunter with mining and herbalism.
I’m inclined to suggest a gnome rogue — rogues get sprint so you can run back and forth quickly between mailbox, bank and AH. Make him an engineer (gnomes get a jump start on engineering skills) and learn the teleport to Gadgetzan and you can have relatively quick access to the neutral AH too (does anyone actually use those anymore?).
Pidge, great suggestions. I will definitely talk about using a rogue – my one in Stormwind uses sprint every single time. For a horde auctioneer, using the neutral AH is something that is very beneficial, but only if you have access to another account, such as your significant other’s, sibling’s or close friend. Having access to it for your main auctioneer however isn’t too important as transferring items to and from alliance is.
Sound nice !
Here are my suggestion …
Race : Draenei
Class : Hunter
Server : PVE
I’ll try to read your previous posts soon … =)
Happy New Year !!!
My suggestion is a character with a speed boost before or at level 20. That means shaman/mage/rogue. This will make getting back and forth between the AH and bank/mailbox much easier. Race/Server-type don’t make much of a difference I feel, only faction/server population as you mentioned yourself. Good luck and nice blog!
