WoW March to 1000 Gold: 6th Podcast, 643g26s
Jan 23rd, 2008 by tyson
Welcome once again to this tutorial series where I take a brand new character (Night Elf Druid) from scratch on a brand new server and earn 1000 gold in the game World of Warcraft. This is without the help of any addons, extra characters, or of course, begging!
This is the podcast where I make many smaller deals (10-20g +) and some larger to catapult myself into a different league altogether. Enjoy!

Thanks for listening, and see you the next!

While I love these podcasts, I wouldn’t bother telling everyone the punctuation that you use in the channel chat
keep up the good work
Yep, good point
It’s impressive the number of bargains you’ve managed to find. I never seem to have as much luck but obviously you know the market very well.
It would be nice if you kept a log of all your transactions in a table. Ie: bought for… sold for and whether you sold on the AH or on the trade channel.
Thanks for the comments. Well I’ve got a screenshot log, so that would be possible I suppose. Today I made somewhat a risky deal since I didn’t find much else. It was in the trade channel and I’ll talk about it in the next.
It obviously matters how matured the server is: for the last couple of weeks I’ve been mostly trying to find the bargains in the categories Tyson refers to, and I have to say that on the server I’m in there is has not been such special prices as of yet. The high end epics are very well priced, almost to the point with Allakhazam and the ones that are priced below that value are usually competed by a couple of other similarily priced.
So I’m reverting back to what I know best: small flipping of commodities, with regular checks on the specific, possible and probable bargains.
Oh, btw. Excellent job on the 1000g March over there! We’ll see the end of the march in the next podcast, I presume?

The maturity of the server should only affect a) how many epics/recipes/high end goods there are, b) the average selling price for those goods, and c) the average amount of *mistakes* people make in inverse relationship to how mature the server is. Less mature = more mistakes… so if it was less mature, you’d be seeing even more since people don’t yet know nor can easily predict the economy. On my server, it is how you describe… prices in epics actually are on the high end and overpriced from allakhazam… very few EPIC bargains to be found. I have yet to make a great deal on one in this March… however I have seen a couple when I didn’t have the gold for them. A couple at the beginning and once yesterday when I had gold tied up elsewhere.
When you do a search for only epics, how many appear on average when you scroll to the bottom and see the total? 50? 100? 150? 200+? That would give me an indication. Also, are you playing Horde or Alliance? There will almost always be less total high end items on the Horde side.
Based off what you’ve said I believe you’ve just hit a dry spell. It will not and cannot last. People are just too variable. In no way have I meant to indicate anyone who’s running commodities stop and only use the exact method I use. Nor just stick to the epics. As I’ve said, epics really aren’t the mainstay money maker any more, with the exception of an occasional whopper deal but one has to search nonetheless because it’s only a fraction of time invested to do so. Most money I make is in slightly lower priced green recipes and blue design patterns. Mainly professions. I also have dry spells occasionally of up to a couple weeks, but usually will make up for it since I deal only in high profit, high margin items. That’s ok with me though.
Like I’ve said, people who use both techniques will make the most money. If you have the time to deal in bulk commodities or use an addon like auctioneer effectively, but also use these techniques, you will likely be richer than me. I think that was a very timely comment, thanks.
Hey Tyson, good job on these. I have a few audio suggestions for you though.
I don’t remember if you said that you were using Audacity but perhaps you could use the following post techniques:
*Load up your MP3 in Audacity.
*Press Ctrl+A to select the whole waveform on the time line.
*From the menu select Effect->Normalize…
* Check DC Offset, Uncheck -3DB and hit OK.
*Next from the menu select Effect->Compressor…
*(Now here is where you may need to be a bit creative) Set the Threshold to -12, Leave the ration at 2:1 and the attack should also be fine at .2 secs. check Normalize to 0db and preview (or OK)
As you can see by the resulting graph as your voice or noise gets to -12db the compressor will “compress” at a ratio of 2:1 in .2 seconds. What this basically means is that the louder and quieter parts will be closer together making your voice more clear. However don’t drop the threshold too low since the noise in the background and your voice will eventually sound the same volume. As a point of referance, -3db is about half the energy.
Anyway something to play with, there’s lots of other things that you can do but this should get you started sounding a little better.
Keep up the good work. I can’t wait to see how this all ends up.
I have a trader on both horde and alliance side, and the amount of stuff in Ally side is approximately 3 to 4 times that of Horde. Strangely enough, the Horde side seems to be more in unison with the prices, and Ally, with larger item base, is generally lower in mean prices.
Usually on Horde side there are around 1 page of epics, while on Ally side 3 to 5.
I’ll come back on that later. I have some trouble with my computer, my new vid card created some mess…
Copra
That sounds in line with my “main” server. On horde, usually about 1 page, a little more of epics (the majority of which being void crystals), and on alliance usually from 3 to 5.
On the “march to” server, haven’t tried horde, but alliance is usually about 4 page of epics. Roughly 200 on sale at any one time. Usually you can with some degree of accuracy predict the amount of other notable stuff on sale just by the amount of epics. Your server doesn’t sound too far off from the norm however. Everyone will have dry spells, I’ve had lots. Something I think would apply to any market.
@Tagor, thanks a lot for the tutorial, I’m just getting into this so did not know any of that. I’m sure that it will help and will use it and perhaps even replace all my existing ones with improved versions.
My pleasure. The only reason I mentioned it is because my laptop speakers are not that good and the only way that I could hear you was to compress your feed.
Audio Recording is really a find art, but you are doing well. keep it up!
Hey. Just wanted to say thanks for the website. I’m downloading all the podcasts and I’ll start listening to them tomorrow. I started to use the AH last week to try to make serious money and I’m glad I found your website. Good luck on the 1000
Hi Tyson, I`m listening to your 3rd podcast right now. I see that so far you almost always bid on short items and not really buyout anything. I currently use the auctioneer addon and never bid on anything, I only look for buyout deals. Do you think this is a mistake? Should I concentrate on bids for low items instead? Thanks.
@Pheragas:
Thanks for listening! At the beginning, I was simply using the “short duration” technique to look at auctions in addition to many other ways but certainly not solely. In fact, you’ll find that I use and prefer buyouts as well, but that looking at short durations is just another way to find a potential good deal.
There is not one way that’s the best way…. otherwise, everyone would be doing it and it would quickly become the un-best way. The best thing is to be diversified in your searches and be able to find deals from any direction.
So? Did you make 1000 gold yet? You had 647 last time. I want to know if you made it or you lost it all
Hint: I’m currently down to 68g. More to follow in podcast.
I need my podcast fix…. uggh…. Right now I feel the same way as when I’m finished watching the 23rd episode of a 24 season…
Give me my podcast!!
