WoW March to 1000 Gold: 7th (last) Podcast, 2172g26s
Feb 7th, 2008 by tyson
Welcome to the last of the tutorial series where I take a brand new character (Night Elf Druid) from scratch on a brand new server and earn 1000 gold in the game World of Warcraft. This is without the help of any addons, extra characters, or of course, begging!
This is the podcast I didn’t think I’d make. Instead I thought I’d make one with about 500g several days ago, a step backward because most of my money was tied up. With a little persistence, however… things happen. I also attempted to follow the advice of a poster on the main page with regard to normalizing the audio quality so hopefully it will sound a tad better for some people.
End Note: This is the last podcast of this series. I thank you very much for listening and hope I helped to perhaps open your eyes to another way of making money, and that it’s definitely possible without help… once you know how.

As for what happens now? I am open to other suggestions for podcasts, experiments, or series. I had a great time with this, and would definitely do more. With regard to the site, expect more tips, and we have decided to try another MMO in addition to World of Warcraft so will let you know how the economy looks to a newbie like me in that game as well.

Great series! I haven’t had a chance to listen to the new one yet, but hopefully I’ll be able to tonight.
I had a couple questions though, I have started trying to play the AH recently and I’ve done pretty well, started with a seed of about 15-20g and I’m up to about 200g with 6-7 decent priced blues and a bunch of green stuff still up. My question is in regards to epic patterns. I’m getting to the stage where this should be my next step but I’m clueless as to the market demand.
My guild currently runs SSC/TK and therefore gets a lot of these epic patterns and most go straight to the ah for what I think are bargain prices, for example today my guild leader put 2 Pattern: Hurricane Boots and 2 Pattern: Boots of Natural Grace up for 250 bid and 350 b/o. I’m tempted to start buying these epics but I don’t know the market for these epic patterns and don’t want to lose most of my money. Any tips?
Thanks a lot.
Definitely be careful about buying those patterns. In fact I recommend you don’t buy any pattern that you see duplicates of, for that high of a price. The hurricane boots and natural grace have already saturated the market in most places. Better would be epic patterns you don’t see very often, but those will typically be more expensive. However occasionally you will find deals as I have, on any server. No matter how high a raider one might be, the AH is a different game and prices prove it.
Best thing to do is highlight the “recipe” category and do a search for epics. That will bring them all up, then just observe and keep an allakhazam window open (wow.allakhazam.com) and check the prices. I cover what to look for at allakhazam in other posts. Just be sure that when you buy an epic or high price item, that the median/avg price has enough margin to cover any market fluctuation. I.e., if you buy something at 250g (the hurricane boots pattern) and then you go and check and the median is 250g (it is as I write this), you are taking a big risk that likely won’t pay off. In fact you can consider Allakhazam just a bit behind the market for popular items, as they tend to be lower real value than what alla shows – they’re always dropping. For “rare” to see epics or any other item, you can pretty much count on alla to be accurate or even slightly below real price.
Thanks for the last podcast. I haven’t listenened to it yet, I can’t wait.
Two days ago I bought the Deadly Poison Manual V for rogues for 10.5g, it sais it was selling for around 25 I think on Allakhazam. I tried to sell it but I was told since the expansion, rogues can learn it at their trainer for 2g. Fortunately it resells to the vendor for 10g, so I didn’t lose much!!
Yep it’s true about those. Even before the expansion actually they allowed them to be learned from the trainer. Good you didn’t lose any. I have no clue why they’re still in the game, except to guess that they haven’t got around to housekeeping those.
Thanks for the advice! I guess I should have probably mentioned one other thing, my server is very very far behind most other progression wise (IE: we only have 4 horde guilds that even do SSC/TK. 1 of which only goes in to key up new people, and 1 other which doesn’t even go past Lurker). So I’m thinking that these patterns really aren’t seen much on my server and I’m not sure how useful allakhazam would be in this situation.
1 more question that I have is how do you go about unloading blue Weapons and Armor in an efficient manner? I seem to have kind of hit a wall here. I’m finding really good deals on lots of blues and snapping them up. I’m relisting most for roughly 75% of market value and yet most are not selling. I’d guess I probably have 300-400g worth of blues (if they sell for my b/o price) that simply aren’t selling. I know I got most all of them for very good deals and I know my prices are fair. Any advice?
One more thing. I had an idea for your next podcast series. Perhaps maybe a guide to the different markets? For instance part 1 could be a guide to low ticket items like cheap green weapons/armor, lower level trade skill items and consumables and cheap patterns. Part 2 could focus on higher priced greens, lower priced blues, medium priced trade skill stuff etc… Part on medium priced blues high priced greens and so on. Maybe give some advice on how to select deals in each market, some tips and tricks on how to sell and just general advice on how to succeed in each market.
Those are great ideas Tom. Thanks. Will keep them along with any others I get. If I get a lot, I’ll put em to a poll.
As for the blues (weapons and armor), they are weird only because it’s a fickle-get-lucky market since they’re really not needed as people get better fairly quickly. If there aren’t any others up, here’s what you do. Look at similar category blues by level (give or take 10 levels) and by weapon/armor type. Price yours accordingly. If someone can get a similar for less, even though it’s not the same, they will. Price yours just slightly lower than the market average and they will sell.
Hey Tyson, would you consider offering coaching sessions? I just finished listening to your last podcast, and I’m impressed by the success you had. I’m also watching the AH every day but don’t seem to find the great deals you’ve been finding. Would you consider connecting to player’s servers and browsing the AH with us to help us spot good deals?
That is sure an interesting proposition Pheragas. Because what you’re proposing is essentially like a broker… I find you some good deals (and/or provide personal coaching), and get a cut. But since I am not really after virtual gold on a random server (or any server that I don’t make myself), I might be open to working out a mutually agreeable deal with those that are interested in this. Maybe something simple as a written testimony that these techniques have helped you earn money, or a small donation to help with cover site costs (which aren’t high as of yet), etc. Or, even a referral, posts on the forum helping others, etc. Something that will help the site. If anyone is interested, I suggest they contact me, or leave a suggestion here as to how this might work.
You know what? Now that you’ve taken a new character on a new server and raised him to 2000 gold in 24 hours of playtime, why not help someone else to do the same thing and continue your podcasts if you want to? It could be a great marketing scheme too for you. I’m very dedicated to making gold in the AH. I currently have around 65g, almost all made with the AH. I’m currently looking for the big deals.
Hey Tyson, great blog ! It inspired me to start looking for deals, but I have questions …
I already had enough money to buy Epics to re-sell them and I’m refering to Allakhazam to set up my prices. (BTW, I missed your post about how to read the Allakhazam prices, can you link it if possible please).
So I bought the plans for the fel edge Battle Axe, it was at 250g b/o in AH, so I bought it. On Alla, the average price is at least 1000g. But, when I list the item for that price, I feel like I’m way overpricing compared to the other epics out there … Is the average price on Alla very reliable ? Because, all the “bargains” I bought seem to be great deals when I look in Alla to compare the prices.
Thank you !
Do you ever play on those decks. Like I saw a blessings deck on my server for 2k= gold and it sold within 2 hours. I bought myself the first four cards at around 500g total. Others are more expensive though.
@Pitlord
I’ve looked at the decks, and know that the Blessings and Furies decks seem to be the most popular at this time. They roughly go for about 2000g each currently and I know that the “seven of” for both decks is the highest money maker, not the Ace. Other than that, I don’t know anything about them. I do know that if I saw one under 1k that I’d probably buy it up
@Brutux
The post you’re looking for is http://www.mmoauctioneer.com/2007/11/auctioneering-101-median-or-average-price/
The avg. price isn’t very reliable, go for the median since it’s usually lower. I’d read that post though, and I’ll say a few words more. You’re looking at a pretty common epic, which will tend to be significantly lower than a more-difficult-to-find epic item, in which the prices on Alla are actually pretty accurate and sometimes even a bit low depending on server. Thing is, if it’s something you see multiples of or common in any way, even though it’s epic, stay away generally unless… like you found, you can find it for 250g. That’s a nice find for a lvl 70 epic weapon. I’d say you could easily sell it for 650g-750g at current market prices, more if you get lucky.
Is there anything I should know with the axe Kang The Decapitator? I bought it for 115g in AH and Allakhazam says it medians for 345g. I put it up once at 335g and it didn’t sell. I advertised it on the trade channel and I only get 2g offers from low level guys. I put it back yesterday at 225g bid – 250g buyout and now I’m waiting to see if it sells at that price. I guess this is normal and I shouldn’t worry about anything but it’s my first big purchase and I’m nervous and don’t want to lose my hard-earned 115g.
Pre-BC epic weapons that are pre lvl 50 with decent stats/damage generally have gone up in price or remained constant. You should make a little profit on it at least. Any specific questions about items though, why not ask in the forum? I’d like to see if it can get more action anyway!
Awesome series
I’m having some trouble breaking into my current server’s economy- it’s well developed and there are probably 5 or 6 people that can at any time change the prices on anything. They each stock over 60k gold and usually swing prices 30-40% throughout the week. Any undercutting is immediately bought out. The few times I have seen someone try to corner a market one of them has quickly bought it out and reposted higher, or severly undercut them again nearly 30-40%. I’d love to hear some advice on suceeding in such a market, especially for someone new to using the auction house effectively. Am I better off buying up some GPE and LPS and heading to a new server? Thanks for any advice and again for the podcast.
