Lich King Auction House – 18000 gold loss
Dec 27th, 2008 by tyson
A couple weeks ago I saw the Nobles Deck on sale for 4000g. I didn’t buy it and did not look further into it. I don’t know why, but a week later I decided to try the new decks again and saw that the average value is in the 20k range. Imagine, a cool 18000g profit. Well, that didn’t happen.
What did happen was that I was up to 16k with my main AHer with still some non-epics I’m trying to pawn off that don’t seem to be selling (such as a couple Chaos deck cards and tailoring recipes). Then my last epic for sale had a competitor so I bought it out at 2200g, reposted it for 3200g along with my other for 4000g, and am playing the waiting game. Nothing has popped up in a while as far as epics go, so I’m going to have to branch into something else if I want to keep the money flowing. Maybe give the 100-500g profit of recipes and rare armor another go.
But really, I have only a now level 14 NE Druid on the server with no other characters with soon to be about 20k in gold. I’m really looking into something else to do, and I believe that this Lich King AH series updates are coming to a close. Next posts will likely return to tutorials about certain aspects of the auction house. Is there anything in particular you want to see? Want to see me try my hand at commodities? That’s scary to be frank, but I’m open. Perhaps I’ll look for and corner certain market and report my success or lack thereof. I certainly have enough gold to raise prices in some areas of the server, but I’m afraid that I’d have to micromanage my AHer, and that’s something that I just don’t have time to do.

Hey Tyson,
I really enjoyed your podcast and I have been checking your site ever since. Since Lich King came out, the AH-market on my server has really gone bananas. I just dont know where to make my profit anymore. Lvl 80 epics are few. Is there still any profit to be made on the lvl 70 epics?
The competition on rare mid 70:s items is tough, and uncommon items just dont seem to sell at all. To make things worse, I’ve only got about 1500g, and I dont want to risk it all on one sell. Any suggestions?
Anyway, I would like to see you try the commodities. Thanks for a great blog.
Thanks Robin. With 1500g, even while you’re playing other areas, I would still be on the lookout for 80 epics that are low priced… you may just double your money. But they’d have to be those that aren’t the common ones of course.
I haven’t actually tried the 70 epic market since Lich King but have looked and see a lot of stagnation there. There isn’t a lot of demand or bidding going on as far as I can tell. Prices seem to be all over but it seems as though the higher priced 70 epics aren’t selling and for good reason.
With that money I would continue to look at rare armor lvl 70-80, non crafted, as well as weapons. It’ll take a lot of sifting through the crafted stuff but people will pay to be different.
Yes the competition is high occasionally but look out for those items especially that seem to be on their own. Good luck and let me know how it goes. You might also try looking for deals in the new decks such as undeath, prisms, nobles.
Like I suggested on an earlier post, perhaps looking into a different aspect of the market, even the commodities market might be interesting (or at least an adventure of sorts). If you pick a market which is suitably small (perhaps the new cloths or old world enchanting mats) you might be able to manage it and make a profit without investing any more time than you do now. What it might entail though is using more tools than your have in the past, namely auctioneer. I know you have been hesitant to use it in the past but I think you’ll find that it would organize a lot of information for you in ways impossible or at best unwieldy without a mod.
